The Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr Yukiya Amano, recently returned from a successful visit to South Africa
During his visit he met with Deputy-President Kgalema Motlanthe at the Deputy President's official residence, Oliver Reginald (OR) Tambo House in Pretoria. Minister of Energy, Ms. Dipuo Peters, and Ambassador Xolisa Mabhongo were also in attendance.
DG Amano engaged with the press and the public on various occasions during his visit, which focussed on strengthening South Africa's relations with the IAEA and South Africa's plans to increase its nuclear energy production. During these interactions he consistently emphasised the important role South Africa plays within the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and commended the South African Government's openness and transparency in inviting the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review Mission (INIR) mission even though South Africa was not a newcomer to nuclear energy.
