NELSON MANDELA RULES

NELSON MANDELA INTERNATIONAL DAY

18 July 2021 marks Nelson Mandela International Day. In recognition of the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Nelson Mandela Rules), this day is also celebrated to promote humane prison conditions, to raise awareness about prisoners being a continuous part of society and to value the work of prison staff. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) therefore invites you to join its global awareness-raising campaign. Take action, inspire change and make your voice heard: #Act4MandelaRules!

How to participate?

Record a video message of yourself (40 seconds max), in which you share your thoughts about the Nelson Mandela Rules and highlight efforts aimed at turning them into reality. What remains to be done to improve the situation of prisoners and those working in prisons, including in times ofCOVID-19? Why should the general public care about the plight of prisoners?

  • Start by presenting yourself in your mother tongue
  • Proceed with your full video statement (English)
  • Conclude with “I act for the Nelson Mandela Rules!”

Which initiatives did you pursue to improve prison management and the treatment of prisoners in your country/region during the last year? What remains to be done to improve the situation of prisoners and those working in prisons, including in times ofCOVID-19? Why should the general public care about the plight of prisoners?
