JOINT STATEMENT DELIVERED BY AMBASSADOR TEBOGO SEOKOLO, GOVERNOR/RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SOUTH AFRICA TO THE IAEA, ON BEHALF OF THE CO-CHAIRS OF THE FRIENDS OF RENUAL AT THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS, 7-11 SEPTEMBER 2015, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

AGENDA ITEM 8: STRENGTHENING THE AGENCY’S ACTIVITIES RELATED TO NUCLEAR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATION

Madam Chairperson

I have the pleasure to speak on behalf of the co-chairs of the Friends of ReNuAL.

I express our deepest gratitude to DDG Malavasi and his colleagues for their briefing to the Friends of ReNuAL on 31 August this year and the update report submitted for consideration by this session of the Board.

Before I proceed with my remarks let me take this opportunity to introduce my fellow co-chair, Ambassador Friedrich Däuble of Germany. Ambassador Däuble is a fervent advocate of the ReNuAL Project. I have no doubt that with the determination and zeal that he has demonstrated since his arrival, we will together accelerate the realization of this project.

Madame Chairperson,

The ReNuAL Project needs around 31 million euros to complete. To date only 15 million euros have been secured. We are half way through from securing all the required resources.  During this session of the Board, many delegations have expressed their support for this project. Accordingly, they have welcomed progress registered thus far. This political support is welcomed and I wish to thank those delegations. Our wish is e that this solid political support is also carried through the General Conference and is translated into actual financial support.

We thank all delegations that have provided financial support to this project, and wish to appeal to others to come on Board and make such announcements during the General Conference.

Finally, we wish to thank the Friends of ReNuAL for their active support of this project and the Secretariat for undertaking all the necessary technical preparations for the execution of the ReNuAL Strategy. We are delighted that works for the renovation of the Insect Pest Control Laboratory has already commenced. Similarly, we thank the Austrian Government for availing its facilities in Modling to the Agency while awaiting the construction of the Biosafety Level 3.

I thank you.
