UNITED NATIONS OFFICE IN VIENNA: ADOPTION OF UN MANDELA RULES - 22 MAY 2015

South Africa, led by the Permanent Mission in Vienna, championed the adoption of the United Nations Mandela rules for the treatment of prisoners. The historic adoption of the Mandela Rules will go a long way in strengthening and complementing legislative and administrative frameworks governing the treatment of prisoners and will further enhance international cooperation amongst Member States. The adoption of the rules was in honour of the legacy of the late President of South Africa, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, who was incarcerated for 27 years in prison fighting for democracy, human rights, equality and peace.
