STATEMENT DELIVERED BY AMBASSADOR RAPULANE MOLEKANE, RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE/GOVERNOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA, AT THE IAEA BOARD OF GOVERNORS, 14 SEPTEMBER 2020, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Agenda Item 5: Nuclear and Radiation Safety Report

Madame Chairperson

South Africa associates itself with the statement delivered by Her Excellency Ambassador Angara on behalf of the Group of 77 and China and His Excellency Ambassador Mezghani on behalf of the African Group.

South Africa thanks the Director General and the Secretariat for the report before us. We have noted the new format that has indeed made it easier to read.

We propose that in future, a Technical Briefing be provided on the report which would allow interaction between the Secretariat and Member States on this very important aspect of the work of the IAEA. This would allow for Member States to have more information and make informed decisions accordingly.

Madame Chairperson

Let me reiterate South Africa’s commitment to continue to find ways to continuously strengthen nuclear and radiation safety in our country. As our nuclear programme continues to expand with various new projects planned for the decade of 2020-2030, including building a new research reactor, expanding the life of one of the world’s oldest and safest nuclear power plants Koeberg, building a small modular reactor to increase our country’s nuclear power production, to name but a few, we remain more committed than ever to ensure that we embark on these projects in a safe and secure manner in close cooperation with the IAEA.

With these remarks South Africa takes note of the Director General’s Report on Nuclear and Radiation Safety contained in document GOV/2020/35 and we stand ready to endorse the Revised Process of Sharing Information as to States Implementation of the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources and its Supplementary Guidance (2019 Edition).
